On October 17, 1989, the elevated double-decked roadways of Oakland's Cypress Freeway collapsed during the Loma Prieta earthquake. This night-time photo was taken three weeks after the quake while cleanup was in full-swing. It was a ghastly sight. a few technical notes... Polaroid Type52 4x5 sheet film. 4x5 Calumet view camera on tripod, with 210mm Schneider Symmar lens. Due to 'reciprocity failure', a 'conjured' exposure time of 2 minutes was lengthened to 5 minutes. It's guesswork based on experience, but when a bad exposure calls for a second or third try, it can get expensive. Lens aperture was stopped down half-way to provide a bit of 'depth of field'.
