I'm just old enough to remember the squid and smells of Cannery Row. Today, it's mostly a tourist trap, and if it looks old and salty, it is most likely 'new and salted'. I grew up just up the hill from Cannery Row, and for a time my father worked as a bookkeeper for a succession of canneries as they folded. I don't think they have ever agreed as to why the sardines left the area. Some folks blame the disappearance on colder water,
and others blame ammunition that was dumped in the bay after WW-2. Trivia: Before WW-2 sardines were called 'pilchards'.
a few technical notes... This photo is not a Polaroid. It was made, probably in 1964, with a 4x5 view camera using a 120 rollfilm back that could be insterted, or removed for focusing.
